Happy Sunday, Reader 🔆

I arrived in Cape Town on Wednesday plenty grateful and exhausted. It’s staggeringly beautiful here.

I rarely share the more mundane and "human" stories from my travels, as I sort of view them as distractions from my real work. But maybe you'll enjoy peeking in.

My flight out of Dubai was scheduled for 4:20am, and — it being an international flight — I normally plan to get to the airport 3 hours early.

This time I talked myself into just 2 hours before boarding ('no one's gonna be there that early Ethan, chilllll — you'll speed right through security.')

2am rolls around, and I call a cab. Everything's great. I get to the airport in record time. I'm already checked in, so I casually walk towards security.

"Sir, your flight does not leave from the Dubai airport."

WTF?

I glance down at my ticket, and…sh*t! My actual flight departs from an airport 30 minutes away.

The stakes are high — I literally do not have enough money to book a new flight to South Africa. Now I'm in full panic mode. Run. Flag a taxi. I'm off. Heart racing. Meditating in the car. Praying. Surrendering. God's got me…right? Make it to the gate right as they begin boarding.

Relief.

Wait…I remember my next layover is only 15 minutes long. More panic. Meditating on the plane. Praying. Surrendering. God's got me…right? Make it to the next gate two minutes before boarding closes.

Relief.

Wait…I had to check my bag for this flight. Did it make it on with such a short layover? Meditating on the runway. Praying. Surrendering. God's got me…right? Luggage was left behind in Ethiopia — gets returned to me the next day.

Relief.

Daily I'm reminded of how unproductive it is to stress and ruminate, especially when there's nothing I can do to remedy a situation (i.e. all of travel). And yet, these situations happen all the time, and I can still forget to stay open through them.

Thought you might like a glimpse into how I handle chaos...enjoy this week's {Body} • {Mind} • {Soul} Newsletter and have a beautiful Sunday,

Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables—cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, collard greens, and mustard greens—belong to the Brassicaceae family and share a distinctive characteristic: they're exceptionally rich in sulfur compounds that support detoxification and cellular repair.

Despite widespread claims that cruciferous vegetables are "goitrogenic" (and therefore harmful to thyroid function), these vegetables actually protect the thyroid by helping remove accumulated radiation from dental X-rays and medical imaging while supporting the gland against viral infections. The goitrogen concern primarily applies to those consuming massive quantities of raw crucifers while simultaneously deficient in iodine—an uncommon scenario.

The sulfur-rich nature of these vegetables contributes to their cancer-protective properties, helping prevent breast, reproductive, brain, intestinal, and lung cancers. These compounds also work to restore lung tissue, stimulate regeneration, and aid in healing lung scar tissue—making them particularly valuable for anyone with respiratory challenges.

Different varieties offer unique advantages. Red cabbage contains anthocyanins that support liver rejuvenation and reduce liver scarring. Brussels sprouts are particularly nutrient-dense, supporting joint health and potentially reversing bone density loss. Kale strengthens connective tissue throughout the body, while green cabbage supports skeletal health and joint function.

Practice
Step-by-step instructions to turn theory into healing.

  1. Rotate your crucifers daily: In season, consume at least a serving of cruciferous vegetables each day, rotating through different varieties throughout the week to access their diverse nutritional profiles and prevent monotony.
  2. Balance preparation methods: Light steaming can increase the bioavailability of certain nutrients. However, some beneficial enzymes are preserved better in raw preparations like slaws or salads. Aim for a mix of both throughout the week.
  3. Use strategic food combinations: Certain pairings amplify the therapeutic properties of cruciferous vegetables:
    • Cauliflower with seaweed (nori, dulse, or kelp) for enhanced detoxification of chlorine, fluoride, and radiation
    • Red cabbage with apples for antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects
    • Broccoli with asparagus for amplified cancer-protective compounds
  4. Support sulfur processing: Your body needs adequate B vitamins and molybdenum to properly process sulfur compounds. If you experience digestive discomfort from crucifers, ensure you're getting these cofactors through varied whole foods or consider starting with smaller portions and gradually increasing.

The consistent inclusion of cruciferous vegetables provides foundational support for detoxification pathways, cellular protection, and tissue repair—making them essential components of any health-focused diet.

Thought withdrawals

There is no stronger drug than thought.

We don't realize this because we've been "on the juice" since birth, but it's true. Thoughts generate (almost) every feeling under the sun: joy, despair, lightness, heaviness, anxiety, peace, rage, contentment. Whatever you're feeling right now, thoughts are orchestrating it.

Given this, it shouldn't surprise you that getting sober from thinking is brutally difficult — harder than quitting nicotine, gambling, or porn.

The moment you shine awareness on your inner monologue, it begins to dissolve. Sounds promising, except now the countdown begins: within seconds, a wave of discontentment will arise. The ego, experiencing withdrawal from its own identifications, starts choking. It needs food. It needs thoughts. Now.

Unlike most addictions, thinking (and freedom from thinking) happens relatively fast.

Consider this: achieving full sobriety from caffeine might require a year of absolute discipline. But breaking free from a thought pattern—truly stopping yourself from thinking about a particular subject—will take, on average, 1 to 8 weeks of consistent non-engagement before withdrawal symptoms cease.

Everyone has the capacity to not think about their problems for that long, but most people simply won't. Why? Because they're addicted to their stress and to themselves. They don't see the promise of a life without their entitlements, belief systems, and grievances. The voice in their head convinces them existence wouldn't be worth living without these familiar mental patterns.

Next week I’ll talk more about breaking the cycle, but for now enjoy the meditation below.

Meditate
Bite-sized audios to help you become the master of your mind.

“Everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission.” — Mourning Dove

Objects and beings are not created in a vacuum, separate from their environment. Biologically and spiritually, everything emerges to fill a particular niche or satisfy a particular need.

Scan your surroundings and realize that what you see was once a thought aimed at solving a problem. Your chair. Your phone. The building sheltering you. Each arose from a kind of necessity.

Now apply that same logic to the earthworm, the sun, or even Jesus. The earthworm arrived to aerate compacted soil and transform decay into fertile ground. The sun came into being to satisfy the necessary pressures and gravitational forces of the laws of physics. Jesus incarnated to point humanity toward compassion when violence and sin threatened to consume it.

You, too, are neither an accident, nor a waste. Whether you are aware of it or not, your particular combination of gifts, wounds, and perspective exists because the world requires exactly what you have to offer.

Contemplative questions on the nature of inner freedom.

What humble role might you be designed to fill that you've been overlooking because it doesn't seem important or impressive enough? How might accepting this role actually be your greatest contribution?
